Day Eight – Toseong and Yeongdo-Gu

My day six addendum was published after day seven was posted – I am having to switch between devices as I am using my iPad to draft the text, but the pictures are stored on my phone. I think this led to a mix up in publishing times. In case you missed day seven scroll down.

This morning was spent in Sylvia’s old neighbourhood of Toseong. We managed to find her primary school, the location of the house where she grew up, and her middle school.

Unfortunately her house was no longer there, although we found the narrow lane where it stood.

At her middle school the Principal saw us in the grounds and came out for quite a long chat with Sylvia.

It was interesting to spend some time walking around residential (non high-rise) Busan. Gave me and the kids a stronger sense of everyday life here.

After lunch in the Lotte food court we took a commuter bus to Yeongdo-Gu, a large island connected by bridge to mainland Pusan. This was where Sylvia went to High School but the school was no longer there.

We spent time looking around Taejongdae park (Pusan seems to have many atractive parks). From the southern tip we could see Tsushima, a disputed island claimed by Korea (and called Daemado) but recognised as Japanese.

And some people fishing from a rock at the base of a cliff. Could not work out how they were able to reach the rock

The park also featured a small temple.

Finally walked to a pebble beach to watch the sun set. Pretty location.

Some women were filleting sea life they claimed to have caught at the beach for sashimi. Sylvia was sceptical that they had caught it, and we decided against buying any as there were no prices marked, and we have noticed special pricing for foreigners, including for the ride around the park.

Dinner was in the markets. $14 fed us all at an outdoor food stall (noodles, rice cakes, fish cakes and kimbab).

Finally walked up to Busan tower for views of the city.
